THIS MORNING STAR SAYS MICHAEL MOSLEY 'WOULD HAVE KNOWN RISKS' AS TRAGIC DEATH DETAILS EMERGE

TV travel expert Simon Calder believes Michael Mosley "would have understood the risks" of the "challenging" Greek hike which cost him his life.

The popular presenter vanished after setting off for a walk alone at around 1.30pm on Wednesday before finally being found on Sunday following an extensive search. A coroner has today found that the 67-year-old broadcaster died after sitting down and passing out in extreme 40C heat on the island as tributes continue to be paid.

This Morning regular Simon stressed that much-loved Michael would have known the dangers as he offered some details about the tricky conditions faced by hikers in Greece during the sweltering summer months. Speaking on GB News today, he said his death was the result of a "misadventure" and an "absolutely tragic loss to his family and to the wider world".

He explained: "I am absolutely in tune with how he was feeling and the decision that he made. It might be seen as irresponsible, and with hindsight we can all look back and say, yes, of course, he should have had his phone with him, he should have made sure he had plenty of water.

"Yes, he should have been hiking with somebody else since he was taking a really challenging hike. However, he was the sort of person who was very, very good at understanding risks and knowing the issues that he could possibly face. Something went tragically wrong, and it has ended with the loss of a great husband, a great father, and a great communicator who helped us all improve our health."

He went on: "The really quite extreme East Greek islands close to the Turkish mainland are characterised by being very hilly, very rocky. It is a difficult area to search. We knew roughly where he was heading, but ultimately if somebody goes missing and you've got no way of tracking him. Then I'm afraid it is just a matter of keeping looking until the terrible moment yesterday when his body was found."

A statement from the star's wife over the weekend said: “I don’t know quite where to begin with this. It’s devastating to have lost Michael, my wonderful, funny, kind and brilliant husband. We had an incredibly lucky life together. We loved each other very much and were so happy together. I am incredibly proud of our children, their resilience and support over the past days.

“My family and I have been hugely comforted by the outpouring of love from people from around the world . It’s clear Michael meant a huge amount to so many of you. We’re taking comfort in the fact that he so very nearly made it. He did an incredible climb, took the wrong route and collapsed where he couldn’t be easily seen by the extensive search team.

“Michael was an adventurous man, it’s part of what made him so special. We are so grateful to the extraordinary people on Symi who have worked tirelessly to help find him. Some of these people on the island, who hadn’t even heard of Michael, worked from dawn till dusk unasked."
